Why Gold Is Priced Per Troy Ounce, Not a Standard Ounce
A troy ounce (31.1035g) is heavier than the everyday avoirdupois ounce (28.35g) used for food or post — bullion, coins and the interbank spot price are always quoted in troy ounces, a convention dating back to medieval bullion trading.
